Coach Mentorship

What is mentorship?

The term “mentor” has been synonymous with personal development for centuries. With its roots in Ancient Greece, the notion of someone to support you during periods of difficulty or help in your progress towards future success isn’t new. The profession has however progressed over the past few decades and whilst popularised in modern business lexicon, the term mentor is often interchangeable with other labels such as coach, role model, guide, teacher, instructor, tutor or trainer.

With such a variety of terms, it can be challenging to truly understand what any mentorship relationship will look like. This can be defined in may different ways but at it’s core, the essence of the mentors role is to:

  • Support a person to grow and develop in a direction they wish to go.

  • Build self-awareness and knowledge of personal and professional values.

  • Empower choice, autonomy and creative problem solving.

  • Act as confidential sounding board.

  • Setting directions of travel in the present for future achievement.

As the term “coach” applies to the person at the focus of the conversation, I have opted to use the label of mentorship as to make it a little less confusing. However, I see much of the work I do as a coach as well. The terms are interchangeable and with each individual requiring a particular style, I tend to adopt a style the coach needs me to be for them. So mentor, coach, role model…….whatever works!

The process

We base much of our mentorship process around the GROW model. Giving sessions structure allows for you as the coach and for Tom as the mentor to know what we are working towards over the course of our sessions. It also helps to develop your self awareness, how to be goal directed, increase confidence and connection.

  • Pinpoint ultimate destination or goal

  • Clarity on motivation

  • Establish importance of goal

  • Identify resources or strengths

  • Identify avenues to reach goals

  • Steps to achieving success
